How to prune a tree?

How to prune a tree?

Aside from shaping, pruning also helps keep your tree healthy by removing any dead wood. It also increases productivity in fruit trees. Follow these easy steps to prune your trees.

When to Cut Trees

The best time to prune trees and shrubs is in autumn or early spring when the plant is dormant, and the sap is not yet circulating in the tunk. The pruning of conifers, however, takes place in mid-June.

How to Cut Trees

There are several types of pruning. Shape pruning is generally carried out during the first 5 years following planting and allows the young trees to build up their trunk. On the other hand, maintenance pruning aims to keep the tree healthy by removing dead or diseased branches.

Lastly, rejuvenation pruning is performed on old trees and consists of removing the greedy and older branches to encourage the growth of new shoots.

Formative Pruning

Formative pruning enables trees to develop a straight trunk. The extension of the tree's central axis is the terminal arrow. You must maintain its dominance by cutting or pruning competing branches. If the tree's central axis becomes subdivided, choose the branch with the best orientation as the central leader.

If the central-leading branch is broken or diseased, select another extension with a more vigorous side branch. You can support the new extension with a stake.

While pruning, please ensure you keep ⅓ of the trunk for ⅔ of the crown. Therefore, branches that are too low should be removed as the tree grows.

Maintenance Pruning

This type of pruning helps keep the plant healthy. It consists of removing any rejects, damaged and greedy branches early on. You can also prune twigs and branches that are too close together and branches that grow inward.

Rejuvenation Pruning

Tree ageing can accelerate the development of greedy branches. By removing them, it is easier for the young shoots to grow. In the case of fruit trees, it also helps increase productivity.

What should I do if my tree is too big for pruning?

Pruning a tree that is too big can be dangerous. The best thing to do in this case is to call the experts. They have the expertise, skills and equipment to prune your tree safely.
