When to Prune a Tree?

When to Prune a Tree?

Want to know when to prune your tree? If you need to prune less than 20% of the branches, you can prune your tree at any time of the year without harming its health. However, if you wish to prune more than 20% of the branches, it is best to wait until the dormant season. This takes place during the winter or very early spring.

Pruning During Winter

You are also less likely to tear your branches during the cold season. However, if you call on a professional, he will know how to cut your branches without tearing them, no matter what time of the year.

Nonetheless, if you prune your tree during the winter, its sap reserve may be out of balance with its mass. As a result, gourmands could form on your tree during the spring and summer. These quick shoots consume a lot of sap and do not respect the structure of the tree. A second intervention may therefore be necessary to eliminate them.

During the cold season, the tree is in vegetative rest, which can prevent it from healing. The tree may therefore be more vulnerable to diseases and fungi.

Pruning during Spring, Summer or Fall

If you need to prune less than 20% of the branches, pruning can be done during the summer season. During the summer, the tree has the benefit of healing quickly. You can take advantage of this of as soon as new shoots appear until the end of August. Your tree will therefore be better protected against diseases and fungi.

During the summer, the sap will already be evacuated in reasonable quantities, which will prevent the appearance of gourmands. Dead branches are also easier to detect during the summer season.

Pruning a Fruit Tree

If you own a fruit tree, you need to make sure that pruning it will not affect your harvest. It’s therefore preferable that you prune your tree in early spring, just before the sap rises. Your fruits will be able to grow abundantly.
